Design

Rachel Jenkins reported that U.S. Representative Susan Brooks was in Greentown today at the History Center to meet with people in her district. There was a good turn out. Rachel also reminded everyone that someone from Rep. Brooks staff is in Greentown the 2nd Wed. of each month from 10 AM – 11:30 AM in the City Building.

Revitalization Committee – Rachel reminded everyone about two dates. June 14 at 5:00 at the Library will be the last Steering Committee meeting to discuss the final plans for Greentown, and June 20 at 6:30 PM at the Library where a representative from Indiana Landmarks will present a program on reuse and revitalization of historic buildings.

Town Beautification – Jolene reported that Community Service Day was May 13th. Jolene, Mary and Jim Miller, Drew Reed and a group brought by Drew were there to help plant flowers and beautify the town. Eastern Cares day was a success . Working with the school, students are assigned jobs in the community to help businesses, the elderly and those on lower incomes to accomplish projects that might not get completed without their help. The two planters by the fountain have been removed and, because the fountain does not work, flowers were planted there.

Murals & Signage – Brittany Miller, Kaley Harness and Elyse Younger discussed the mural project for Heartland Market. They are working with the curator at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis for designs of the Miami Indians headdress to be authentic to this area. They also discussed paint prices. It was reported that Drew Reed has talked to Mike at Heartland Market and he is favorable for the mural. Funding for the mural was discussed. An OCRA Grant that was thought to help is not available. We have money in the town beautification account which could be used. Also we could apply for a Community Foundation grant for future murals.

Wayfinding signs were discussed. Some designs were a Comet, stained glass and a cut out G. After looking at the designs the board expressed favorable towards the stained glass design with different color strips and a solid arrow. Estimated costs were discussed and a better quote will be presented at the next meeting.

Economic Vitality

Rachel Jenkins, Mark Lantz, John McCarthy, Mary Miller and Jolene Rule are learning ways to help the businesses here in town. Rachel has been distributing a letter explaining the options for potential renovation/restoration of their building to local business owners in town. It explains the Town of Greentown grants, a Howard County matching grant, Indiana Landmarks contact person and a Greentown Historic District tax credit.
